Currently, there is a limited number of mainstream brands that sell foldable smartphones. Brands like Huawei, Samsung, and Motorola are seen as the front-runners in this market but Xiaomi is expected to join the race soon. In fact, Ross Young, the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultations (DSCC) claimed that brands like Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo are set to launch foldable smartphones in 2021.
Ross Young reveals Xiaomi will enter the foldable smartphone market
Ross Young, the CEO of DSCC shared the alleged development that Xiaomi could launch three foldable phones in 2021. Xiaomi was already touted to be in the works for a foldable smartphone. Moreover, Oppo and Samsung are also working on foldable phones with the upcoming Galaxy Fold 3 to come with a smaller main display.
So the next foldable to hit the market will likely be from Xiaomi who is expected to have 3 foldables in the market in 2021. They will actually have all 3 types. The first will be outfolding, the second will be in-folding and the third will be clamshell.

As per Young’s tweet, the next foldable phone to hit the market is likely to be from Xiaomi. He also claimed that Xiaomi is likely to release three foldable phones in 2021 and they could be launched in three distinct types – clamshell, out-folding, and in-folding. However, he didn’t mention which of them would be launched first. Earlier in 2020, it was reported that Xiaomi had placed an order with LG Display and Samsung Display for foldable OLED panels for an unnamed clamshell-type phone.
Cetus, the codename for the first Xiaomi foldable?
In October, XDA Developers reported that Xiaomi was working on a foldable with the codename “Cetus” in the MIUI 12 Beta. Moreover, the device could be equipped with a 108MP camera and a Snapdragon chipset.
Other specifications and details of Cetus are yet to be revealed. However, it seems to be one of the Xiaomi foldable phones expected to be launched next year. Xiaomi has already filed multiple patents for foldable smartphones with different designs. More information and designs are expected to come out in the coming weeks as Xiaomi gears up for an exciting 2021.
