It has been over a year since Microsoft officially launched Surface Pro 7, and there has been little news about its successor since then. However, things have changed and the situation has taken a strange turn.
The world got the first glimpse of the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 via a leaked prototype and it didn’t come from a traditional leak. One of the engineering samples turned up on eBay and it had both good and bad aspects to it. The prototype included a blue Type Cover and was sold for $1,300.
The good news coming from the Surface Pro 8 leaked prototype
First, the good news. According to the leaked prototype on the eBay listing, someone from Seattle, Washington was selling the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 with the powerful Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor, 1TB of SSD Storage, and 32GB of RAM.
If this turns out to be true, it means that the upcoming Surface Pro 8 will come in configurations that’ll offer some seriously powerful components.
The Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor is the latest quad-core Tiger Lake processor that comes with a max turbo frequency of 4.70GHz. Complemented perfectly by 32GB of RAM, this is a capable productivity machine in a thin, light tablet form. Of course, many people might not like this kind of specs and it might be overkill, which is why it is expected that the Surface Pro 8 will come in a range of different configurations and specifications.
The bad news coming from the Surface Pro 8 leaked prototype
While Microsoft packing the upcoming Surface Pro 8 with numerous latest and most powerful mobile components is definitely good news, but this leak also hinted at a bit of bad news – certainly for those hoping for a major redesign from the predecessor, Surface Pro 7.
The photos that accompanied the eBay listing for the Surface Pro 8 showed that the tablet looks identical to the Surface Pro 7, which itself looks a lot like its predecessors. For a lot of people, this means the Surface Pro design has gotten a bit stale, and many were hoping for the upcoming version to introduce a new look and feel, albeit like the Surface Pro X.
If this leak turns out to be real, it looks like the Surface Pro 8 fans would be stuck with the same old design.
When is the device rumored to hit the market?
It is still not known when the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 will hit the market, though it is widely expected that it won’t be happening in2020. Early 2021 seems to be the earliest that people can expect some sort of announcement, provided COVID-19 doesn’t affect Microsoft’s plans much.
However, it is still possible that Microsoft could throw a spanner in the works and launch the Surface Pro 8 to compete with Apple after it announced that it’ll be unveiling the Apple Silicon MacBook.
