Oppo Reno 5 series: Here’s all you need to know

The Reno 4 series, especially the Pro model, was indeed an eye catcher, and from what we now know, it seems the Reno 5 Pro will be one too.

Oppo’s successor to the Reno 4 series, the Reno 5 looks to be just around the corner. And while it doesn’t have an official confirmation for the same, there are signs and legitimate certifications for the series letting us know a lot about it and what to expect from it. The Reno 4 series, especially the Pro model, was indeed an eye catcher, and from what we now know, it seems the Reno 5 Pro will be one too. So, here’s what to expect from Oppo’s next Reno phones.

Earlier this month, the Reno 5 badge or series name was confirmed as Thailand’s NBTC authority certified the moniker. This also meant that the Reno 5 will likely launch in other regions outside of China. Also, at least, one of the models will get the model number CPH2159 in the global market. From what we’ve seen so far, Oppo definitely has two devices in the series – the low-end Reno 5 and the high-end Reno 5 Pro. However, there might even be a third variant this time around. More about it later.

Oppo Reno 5 Pro

The more interesting part of the report is usually the TENAA approval in China’s homeland and the Reno 5 series just got a pretty elaborate one with complete pictures and a key specifications of the Reno 5 Pro.

As per TENAA’s database, the Reno 5 Pro will feature a 6.55-inch Full HD+ curved display with a 1080 x 2340 resolution. Whether this display is AMOLED or LCD is not yet known and neither is its refresh rate details. Nevertheless, since the Reno 4 Pro had both an AMOLED and a 90Hz refresh rate, we expect the Reno 5 Pro to at least match that. As for the processor, it is listed as a 2.6GHz octa-core processor. However, a recent Geekbench appearance of the same phone showed the Dimensity 1000+ CPU.

As the images show, the Reno 5 Pro will have a quad-camera setup. The primary is a 64MP sensor accompanied by an 8MP ultra-wide lens. These two main sensors are clubbed with two auxiliary 2MP sensors. For selfies, the Reno 5 Pro will feature a 32MP front camera sensor.  Hence, this looks a marginally better setup than the 48MP sensor. However, the exclusion of a telephoto that was present on the Reno 4 Pro is clearly a step backwards.

The Reno 5 Pro is indeed going to have a slightly bigger battery 4,250mAh, having a split architecture to support the 65W fast charging feature.

In terms of connectivity, expect Oppo to equip the Reno 5 Pro with 5G, 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth, GPS, and USB Type-C. It should run on Oppo’s latest Color OS 11 based on Android 11 on first boot.

Oppo Reno 5

Coming to the smaller Reno 5 model, the Oppo Reno 5 is expected to arrive with a 6.43-inches FHD+ AMOLED display that will come with a hole-punch design to accommodate its 32 megapixels selfie camera. The key difference here is the curved display which is only on the Reno 5 Pro. The other specifications of the handset are identical to its bigger sibling, the Reno 5 Pro save for the CPU which is believed to be a Snapdragon 765 5G.

Moreover, the series hasn’t retains much of its design language from the predecessor making the Reno 5 series more of a marginal incremental update at best.

Oppo Reno 5 Pro Plus

Now, there’s talk about a Reno 5 Pro Plus model that will allegedly be a flagship powered by a Snapdragon 865 SoC, 50MP main camera, and a 4,500mAh battery with 65W fast charging. Keep in mind that all this stems from the realm of leaks, albeit from trustworthy sources. However, it could end up being nothing but hot air, as far as leaks go.

That’s all we know about the Reno 5 series so far. Considering the amount of information we already have, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see a launch date announcement in the coming days in China. Soon after, a launch in India will follow.
