Reliance Industries announced earlier this year that Reliance Jio and Google will collaborate to launch an affordable Android-based Jio smartphone. Now, according to a report by Bloomberg, the smartphone can be priced at ₹4,000 ($54).
It will be a low range 4G and 5G mobile handset. Some other highlights of these smartphones include cheap data packs. The Jio-Google smartphones are expected to be launched by the end of 2020 or by early 2021.
The smartphones will be cheap since Reliance aims to manufacture around 100 million low-cost devices. Jio is urging local suppliers to speed up the production capacity in India so that they’re able to manufacture as much as 200 million smartphones in 24 months. The low-cost smartphones might even arrive bundled with exciting data packs.
India heading towards a “2G mukt Bharat”?
Alphabet-owned Google had invested ₹33,737 crore for $7.1 stake in Jio platforms in July 2020, which is under regulatory review. This is why Jio is going ahead with the mobile phones alone. It is being seen as Jio’s bid to make India “2G mukt Bharat since it has already made 4G data available at more affordable prices.
Jio is targeting almost half a billion owners who still don’t own 4G smartphones. Reliance wants its 4G wireless gadgets (one tier below 5G) to be in the hands of around 350 million users, who currently have basic phones. At a recent industry event, Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, said millions in India were “trapped in the 2G era”.
“Their feature phones keep them excluded, even from the basic uses of internet at a time where both India and the rest of the world are standing at the doorsteps of 5G telephony,” Ambani was quoted as saying.
Leaked specifications for Reliance Jio-Google 4G smartphone
According to reports, the Jio and Google Android smartphone was spotted on the Google Play Console.
The phone can be named Reliance Orbic RC545L and may come packed with Android 10 OS. The OS will be paired with Qualcomm Snapdragon QM 215 SoC chipset that is also used in Android Go smartphones. Moreover, the phone is also rumored to come with an HD+ screen with 720×1440 pixels screen resolution.
Interestingly, Jio is also preparing to launch a few low-cost devices in the 5G segment. The rumored phones are Orbit Magic 5G, Orbit Myra 5G, and Orbit Maui. All three of them will be bundled with Android 10 OS with no OEM skin or unnecessary bloatware. While Orbit Maui is expected to come in both 4G and 5G models, the other two are expected to come as 5G-only devices.
