Is it smart to buy Thomson’s low budget TVs?

Experts and users believe the brand, which has its smart TV range beginning from Rs 9,999, offers some great deals but the products are not meant for long term.

Thomson, a brand marketed by Super Plastronics Pvt Ltd in India, has its basic TV model priced at Rs 5,999 and its smart TV range starts from Rs 9,999.

The basic model — Thomson R9 — is a 24-inch HD LED TV with 1366 x 768 pixels resolution and it comes with 2 HDMI ports, 1 USB port and 1 headphone speaker output port. And, the brand’s cheapest smart TV — Thomson LED Smart TV B9 Pro — is a 32-inch TV that supports top online streaming services with an Android operating system. It comes with 1GB RAM and 8GB storage capacity.

To know if these budget televisions are a good buy, The Electronics spoke to tech experts and consumers.

“It is amazing to see a smart TV at this price, which includes almost all the features that a high-end top-selling smart TV has. There isn’t anything to complain about its display quality as it supports HD 4K videos. But, if looked closely, issues like a late response to command controls and drop in audio quality at high volumes, can be spotted,” said Shraddha Ashok Manel, a Pune-based tech reviewer.

Thomson LED Smart TV B9 Pro has three HDMI ports and two slots for USB ports. It also comes with built-in-Wi-Fi and features HD ready LED screen with 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. The television has IPS A+ panel and Wide Colour Enhancer Plus for detailed visual features on the screen.

“In my opinion, this is the best buy for those who want to have a smart TV but don’t want to invest huge amounts in it,” the tech reviewer added.

Since smart televisions usually come with a wide range of features, they are mostly priced high and out of budget. Hassan Dutta, a 27-year-old software engineer who owns a Thomson R9, said, “I wanted a budget-friendly TV that can satisfy minimum consumer criteria like visual quality and durability, which was somewhat there in this TV. So it kind of saved my money from getting an expensive one.”

“I wouldn’t really recommend people to invest in this unless they don’t really have any other choice. It is good but not meant for long term,” Dutta added.

Although it isn’t among the top-selling products, Thomson LED Smart TV B9 Pro 32-inch has a rating of 4.3/5 on Flipkart. According to customer ratings, the picture quality stands at 4.2/5; sound with 3.9/5 and the rating for its connectivity features is 3.4/5.

“Thomson LED Smart TV B9 Pro was my first choice. It has all the basic features, like online streaming applications and laptop mirroring. However, it slightly compromises on the visual quality but that can be neglected for the price it comes for,” said Sushant Kumar Pankaj, a 32-year-old IT professional.

The Thomson Smart TV collection is available only on Flipkart but it has a limited stock.
