How to change your Facebook, Instagram passwords

Here are steps to help Facebook and Instagram users change their passwords to keep their accounts safe.

To avoid cyber attacks, it’s advisable to change passwords often and also have different passwords for different social media applications. Although keeping the same password forever is a common practice, but it’s a very unsafe one.

Here are steps to help you change and reset your Facebook and Instagram passwords:

Facebook

For smartphone users (Android/iOS)

  1. Open the Facebook app on your smartphone, and then select the Menu button which is denoted as three horizontal lines on the right side of your screen.
  2. Scroll down and select the second last option ‘Settings and Privacy’ and select the ‘Settings’ option from there.
  3. You will be directed to a new page. There, select ‘Security and Login’ option and then select ‘Change Password’.
  4. Now you will get three options. Type out your current password in the space provided, then enter the new password and then confirm it.
  5. Once you are done, hit ‘Save’. Your password has been changed.

For PC users

  1. Go to Facebook.com on your web browser and open your profile. Then click on the downwards pointed arrow on the top right side.
  2. Click on ‘Settings and Privacy’ and then select ‘Settings’.
  3. You will be directed to a page. Select ‘Security and Login’ from the list on the left side of the screen and then select ‘Change Password’.
  4. A drop box would assist you to type your old and new passwords.
  5. After re-entering the new password, click on ‘Save Changes’ to change your password successfully.

Instagram

For smartphone users (Android/iOS)

  1. Open the app on your smartphone and select the extreme right button that will direct you to your profile.
  2. Then, select the Menu button which is denoted by three horizontal lines, and then tap on the ‘Settings’ icon on the left corner of the box.
  3. You will get a list of items. Select the fifth option: ‘Security’. You will be directed to another list of items. Select the first option: ‘Passwords’ that comes with an icon of a key.
  4. Now you will have to type your current password, the new password and confirm it.
  5. Once you are done entering all this, hit ‘Save’ and your password will be changed.

For PC users

  1. Go to Instagram.com on your web browser and open your profile. Then click on either your username that’s on the right side of your screen or select the extreme right button on your profile picture and select ‘Profile’.
  2. Click on the Settings icon beside ‘Edit Profile’ and then select the first option: ‘Change Password’.
  3. You will be directed to another page where you will have to type your old password, the new password and re-enter the new password.
  4. Once done, select ‘Change Password’ and your new password will be updated.
