Apple iPhone 12 launch: What should you expect?

Apple may unveil its first-ever 5G iPhone lineup and other products in the October 13 event.

Apple’s September 2020 event did not divulge any details about the tech giant’s much-awaited iPhone 12 lineup. However, the wait is over as Apple uncovers its first-ever 5G iPhone lineup — iPhone 12 series — in a virtual event called ‘Hi, Speed’, which is perhaps a reference to the much faster 5G wireless network. The event will be held on October 13, 2020, at 10:30 pm IST (10 am PDT).

Here’s all you should expect:

Four iPhone 12 models

In its third big virtual event of the year, the Cupertino-based tech giant is expected to showcase four models as part of the iPhone 12 lineup:

  • 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini
  • 6.1-inch iPhone 12
  • 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro
  • 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max

The iPhone series is rumoured to have a starting price of $749 (roughly Rs 51,300) and will, perhaps, go upwards to $1,200 (roughly Rs 88,000) in the US.

The iPhone 12 Mini is the most compact and affordable model in the bunch. It is expected to have the same energy-efficient A14 bionic chipset and this is crucial since the device may have smaller batteries. As for the cameras, it is expected to have a 12MP main rear camera and 12MP ultra-wide camera, with slight enhancements in the lens. However, it might skip the telephoto camera and the LiDAR sensors, which are expected to be present in the high-end models.

The handset is also rumoured to sport a larger display despite the compact size, thanks to a smaller notch design and elimination of the touch ID button, according to a leak by Jon Prosser, an Apple tipster.

Like the other models, iPhone 12 Mini is also expected to support 5G connectivity, but may not support the millimetre waveband that offers high speed. This model will definitely be a better option for those looking for a compact handset that packs up the essential features of the other models and is expected to be at par with iPhone 11 series in terms of cost.

This iPhone lineup is particularly crucial for Apple to make its way into 5G cellular connectivity. Although, we will have to wait and see if Apple manages to dominate the market since India might soon see a lot of brand offerings in the 5G category.

The new iPhone 12 is expected to incorporate the high-performance and energy-efficient A14 processor along with OLED display. For the rear camera, the 2020 lineup is expected to bring about some improvements in the existing triple-lens setup of the 2019 iPhone series.

It is also rumoured that the iPhone 12 Pro series will feature a LiDAR time-of-flight depth sensor to support enhanced Augmented Reality experience. The Pro series may also have an increased zooming range.

In terms of design, the iPhone 12 is expected to have flat sides to match the aesthetics of the iPad Pro.

AirTags

In the Tuesday event, Apple might also reveal its location-based tracking device called AirTags. The device can be used to track your keys, wallet, bags, etc.

The iOS-integrated location-tracker will supposedly use ultra-wideband technology instead of Bluetooth to provide better accuracy. Although some rumours also point towards a delay in AirTags until March 2021.

HomePod Mini

Rumour has it that Apple is all set to announce a miniature and low-cost version of its smart speaker, the mini HomePod at the ‘Hi, Speed’ event. This smart speaker is expected to compete against the Amazon Echo Dot and Google Home mini.

While certain rumours suggest that Apple may also launch other products, some hint at that not being the case owing to delays caused by COVID-19. These products include a high-end over-ear headphone called AirPods Studio and a new Apple TV streaming box.

One of the strangest things, however, was a leak that showcased a magnetic coil inside the iPhone 12, as revealed by YouTuber, EverythingApplePro. The magnetic coil will possibly allow wireless charging.

You can watch the live stream at 10:30 pm IST on Apple’s official website or on the company’s YouTube channel. The event will be hosted at the company’s corporate headquarters, Apple Park.
