Among Us beats PUBG, becomes most popular game worldwide

Developed by US-based InnerSloth, Among Us has topped the list of most downloaded games in Q3 2020 on both App Store and Google Play store

With a raging pandemic forcing several nations to go under a full or partial lockdown, online gaming has entered the list of booming industries. Revenue of mobile gaming apps surged considerably during the quarantine period, generating $20.9 billion in worldwide consumer spending on the App Store and Google Play Store.

After the Union government banned more than 200 Chinese apps, people began looking for alternatives to one of their favourite gaming apps — Tencent’s PUBG Mobile. According to reports, a new American mobile game — Among Us — has dethroned the Tencent game to rank number one on the list of the most downloaded games worldwide in the third quarter of 2020.

Among Us is a multiplayer game that can be played online or over local Wi-Fi with up to 4-10 players. The game has gained popularity not only in India but also in the United States, Mexico, South Korea and the Philippines, generating 41 million downloads in September 2020, according to a report by Sensor Tower.

Why the sudden fame?

InnerSloth’s Among Us is not a new game. It has been around since June 2018. At the time, the game barely had a 30-50 average count of players. Despite the lack of marketing and response from users, the developers continued to refine it, subsequently adding two new maps to it.

Soon enough, the Twitch gamers caught on to its fascinating yet simple interface and thus began its breakthrough in popular gaming charts. The third quarter of 2020 has seen 13 times more downloads of the game than that of its previous year.

In August 2020, InnerSloth had decided to roll out Among Us 2. But the very next month, they dropped that plan citing the game’s popularity to be the reason for the sequel’s cancellation.

Since then, the company has been focusing on the original game’s server improvements and even promised to add new levels and develop account systems.

The game’s future lies in the hands of its developers to maintain its position in the cut-throat mobile gaming industry. For now, you can download the free version of Among Us from Google Play Store and App Store. The paid version of the game is also available on Steam. However, you can also use third-party apps like BlueStacks to play the mobile version on PC and Mac.
