Farmville, easily one of the most popular casual games on Facebook alongside Candy Crush and Mafia Wars, is going to go offline by the end of this year.
American maker Zynga came out with this announcement on their website as well as on Farmville’s Facebook page on Saturday, September 26th.
Farmville, the most iconic farming simulator game led to a generation of casual Facebook gamers and even brought in a considerable number of users to Facebook. To recall, Farmville was launched on Facebook back in 2009 and it became immensely popular within no time. Farmville was a farming-simulation online game that requires players to plant, plow, harvest, and raise livestock along with all of their Facebook friends.
Now, it is going to be shut down on December 31st, 2020. Zynga, the creator of this game confirmed that it’ll be pulling the plug on this game because Adobe Flash, which Farmville was using to power the game, will no longer be supported on any web browser.
“Following an incredible 11 years since its initial launch back in 2009, we are officially announcing the closure of the original Farmville game on Facebook. We are aware that many of you have been with us since the very beginning, helping to build an incredible global community of players over the years who’ve enjoyed this game just as much as we have. For that, we say you thank you,” Zynga said in their official statement.
The closure of this game is tied directly to Adobe stopping its distribution and updating process of its Flash players for web browsers as well as Facebook stopping support for their Flash games on the platform after December 31st, 2020.
While Farmville is still live and it’ll still be accessible on Facebook until the end of 2020, any Farmville player will not be able to make in-game purchases by using real-world money from November 17th. Zynga has decided to continue running in-game events so that they can give the game a great sendoff.
The mobile version of the game, Farmville 2, is unlikely to be affected by what happens to the Facebook version and it’ll continue running across iOS and Android platforms. Zynga even plans on launching a third edition of the franchise soon. The Facebook version of Farmville was a massively popular game in the prime years of Facebook, drawing in Farmville players of all age groups, from kids to teens to adults to even elderly.
