California-based tech giant, Apple made some exciting new hardware and software revelations in its annual event dubbed ‘Time Flies’ this year. From smartwatches and iPad to software updates such as iOS 14 and other services, the tech giant had plenty to share in this event.
iPad Air (4th Gen) Incorporates the Most Advanced A14 Bionic Chipset
The latest announcement by Apple in the long lineup of its tablets is the iPad Air. The iPad Air has Apple’s most advanced chip, namely, A14 Bionic. This chip immensely enhances the performance of the device with its five-nanometer process technology and 11.8 billion transistors. It consists of a 16 neural core engine which according to Apple, is capable of performing 11 trillion operations per second.
The iPad has a 10.9-inch retina display, a 12MP rear camera, along with a Touch ID sensor on the top button. The front part of the iPad has a 7MP camera for taking selfies. The iPad Air has a USB-C port which allows for data transfer at a speed of 5GBps.
The iPad Air is available in 5 flashy designs: silver, space grey, rose gold, green, and sky blue. The iPad unveiled in “Timeflies Event” is in its design very similar to the iPad Pro.
The iPad Air starts at a price of Rs. 54,900 (for WiFi model), making it a relatively cheaper option than other iPads like iPad PRO while retaining the basic features relevant to people. The WiFi + Cellular model will be available at a price of Rs. 66900. This iPad will be compatible with the 2nd-gen Apple pencil priced at Rs. 10,900. The iPad Air will be available in India from October.
With many of its features, Apple regards the iPad Air as “the most powerful iPad Air ever”.
New iPad 8th-Gen
Apple has also launched an eighth-generation iPad with an A12 Bionic chip which promises a 40% faster performance. The chip brings the “neural engine” to the entry-level iPad for the first time. The A12 Bionic chip, which is an upgrade to the A10 one in the 7th-generation, is a six-core processor, unlike the latter which was dual-core. The 8th-generation iPad retains the same size as the 7th-generation iPad and also has the Apple pencil support.
The WiFi model of the new iPad 8th-gen will be available at Rs. 29,900 for 32GB and Rs. 37,990 for 128 GB. The WiFi plus cellular model will be available at Rs 41,900 for 32GB and Rs 49,900 for 128GB. In India, the product will be available from October onwards.
Apple also announced the next major update in its software with the launch of iOS 14 which will be made available from today- 16th September.
This software update will, for the very first time, add widgets to the home screen of the iPhone and iPad. Apart from this, iOS 14 will offer a new App Library for organizing the different apps. There will also be an offline translation app which will support 11 languages initially. Apart from this, there will be a new App Clip feature, new Memoji accessories, mentions and in-line replies feature in iMessage, real-time headphone audio alerts, among others.
The iOS 14 along with iPadOS 14 makes Apple Pencil compatible for the iPad to offer better writing and drawing experience. The smart selection feature uses machine learning to differentiate between handwritten texts and drawings. The shape recognition features will allow a user to draw geometrically accurate shapes. Moreover, the data recognition feature will help in distinguishing handwritten text of phone number, addresses and links. iPadOS 14’s new Scribble feature will allow users to “write by hand in any text field across iPadOS, and [the] words [will] automatically convert to text.”
The Apple one combines five of Apple’s most popular apps – Apple Music, Apple TV Plus, Apple Arcade, Apple News Plus, and iCloud storage. The Apple One bundle consists of three options which the users can select from individual, family and premier. In the individual plan, users will get access to Apple Music, Apple TV Plus, Apple Arcade, and iCloud storage (50GB) for Rs 195 per month. The family plan will give access to the same along with an additional iCloud storage of 200 GB for Rs. 365 per month. The premium option includes Apple Music, Apple TV Plus, Apple Arcade, 2 TB of iCloud storage, Apple News Plus and Apple Fitness Plus. However, it seems that India will not have the premium option as Apple News is yet to launch in the country.
