How MIT Is Crushing The COVID-19 Pandemic Using Artificial Intelligence

The healthcare industry is seeking the support of emerging technologies to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is carrying out extensive research to explore the application of Artificial Intelligence concerning the virus.

Machine learning algorithms and Natural Language Processing, among other AI techniques, are being deployed in several projects to achieve groundbreaking results. AI is being leveraged right from achieving efficient contact tracing to making intelligent judgments while designing and producing vaccines.

A research consortium named C3.ai Digital Transformation Institute was established in March 2020 to explore the application of AI, machine learning, the Internet of Things, and cloud computing in the different industries. The consortium includes the world’s eminent scientists and researchers to accelerate digital disruption and to realize the goals of the consortium. MIT is a part of the consortium along with other leading institutions and research centres such as Microsoft Corporation, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of California, Berkeley, Princeton University, University of Chicago,  Carnegie Mellon University, Stanford University, National Center for Supercomputing Applications, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The initial priority of the consortium was centred on accepting project proposals for battling the spread of COVID-19 and to use AI to reduce the ill-effects of the pandemic. A total of 26 projects were approved and advanced for further research with a funding of $5.4 million.

Approved projects for COVID-19

The first round of approved projects included five recipients from MIT. Here is a briefing of the projects:

  • Dimitris Bertsimas’ project is on building automated decision-making systems to enhance healthcare procedures.
  • Ozdaglar research is based on providing comprehensive analyses to reinstate the economy. The findings will help in guiding the strategies to cater to specific risk-level and interaction patterns.
  • Amin is researching on the conception of useful insights and effective implementation approaches to stabilize the economy and to reopen mobility services in urban systems.
  • Dahleh’s research is specifically focused on the utilization of machine learning to safeguard the educational institutions from the ill-effects of the pandemic.
  • Giffor’s project uses machine learning to devise smart vaccine designs for better public coverage and to develop models to reduce the impact of the virus.

The healthcare industry has leveraged emerging technologies in time and again to introduce groundbreaking innovations. A difficult time like this relies heavily on the intersection of technology and science for the best results. As reported earlier, smart wearable startups are also using Bluetooth technology and GPS to detect COVID-19 symptoms.
